Maafa (In Rememberance Of Our Ancestors)

"Maafa" the Kiswahili term meaning "terrible occurrence" or "great disaster," refers to the great holocaust of the transatlantic slave trade, which caused the destruction of African societies and the deaths of millions of people. On Sunday June 3rd members and friends of Sojourner Truth gathered at the beach at 7:30am and in church at 11am to mourn the lives lost and commemorate the fighting spirit for freedom that still lives in our people.

WE WORE WHITE AS A SYMBOL OF SOLIDARITY.

Come to the altar

Looking out over the horizon

Deep prayer

Words of ritual

We gather in honor of those who came before us and died for us

The drum is the heart beat of our people

Connecting to the soil on which our ancestors stood
